Editorial policy & how we test

How lessons are written, how recipes are checked, and what the on-screen swatches can and can't tell you.

How lessons are written

Each lesson answers one question painters actually ask, usually found in search suggestions, forums and classes. We start with a short, direct answer, then explain the reasoning: color bias, complements, value and temperature.

Lessons are written and reviewed by Samurai Manager.

How recipes are checked

  • Established practice first. Recipes use widely taught mixes (for example ultramarine + burnt sienna for greys and browns) rather than novelty combinations.
  • Model check. Every recipe swatch is computed with Pigmento's pigment model, a single-constant Kubelka–Munk approach over reflectance curves. If a mix doesn't produce the color the text describes, we change the recipe or the text.
  • Palette check. [Owner: describe your real palette tests here, e.g. which brands and media you test with. Only describe tests you actually do.]

Limits of on-screen color

Screens can't show paint exactly. Brands differ in pigment load and binder, glazes behave differently from mixtures, and very dark colors look lighter on a monitor than paint does at full strength. Treat every swatch and ratio as a starting point, and test on your own palette.

Videos

Videos on the Watch & Learn page are chosen because they show a technique clearly. Titles and creators come from YouTube, and the descriptions are our own. We're not affiliated with the creators.

Advertising, sponsors and affiliate links

Ads, sponsored listings and affiliate links help keep Pigmento free. They're always labelled, and they never change what a lesson recommends. Paint suggestions are based on how pigments mix, not on commissions.

We fix errors as soon as we confirm them and update the date shown on the lesson. To report one, contact us.
